Look for the larvae and puparia (called flaxseed) between the leaf sheath and stem base. Use of the fly-free planting date (Oct. 1 for northern Missouri to Oct. 18 in southeastern Missouri) and varieties resistant to Hessian flies are the most effective management tools.
